Inside the technology

What's inside your phone?

System

Start with the computer in a smartphone.

The left phone shows what you see — apps on a touchscreen. The right one is the same phone opened up: a circuit board, camera and speaker, and a battery that fills most of the case.

PCB

Those parts connect through a printed circuit board.

The circuit board's copper traces route power and signals between the processor, memory, power management, radio and connectors.

Chip

The main work happens inside one integrated circuit.

The processor is a packaged chip: a plastic block that protects a tiny silicon die and connects it to the board through rows of metal pins and hair-thin bond wires.

Die

Inside the chip are blocks of repeated circuits.

A silicon die contains many regions for processing, storage, timing and communication.

Logic

Logic gates turn electrical signals into decisions.

Logic blocks connect gates such as NAND, OR and NOT. Here A and B feed a NAND gate, branch to an OR gate, and A also feeds a NOT gate.

CMOS

Each logic gate is built from a few transistors.

This CMOS NAND gate uses four transistors: two PMOS transistors in parallel pull the output high, and two NMOS transistors in series pull it low only when A and B are both 1.

Transistor

At the smallest layer, transistors act like tiny switches.

Modern transistor features are just a few nanometers — a human hair is roughly 70,000 to 100,000 nanometers wide, so thousands of them fit across a single hair. Think of the chip as a city: every transistor is one citizen, and billions of them work together to run your apps.
